Elvis
Presley: Diamond Celebrity of the Week
Elvis Presley may not be universally acknowledged as the King of rock'n'roll – in
hindsight, we must give proper credit to the black R & B musicians that he
borrowed extensively from. But he remains at least a baron of blues and a duke
of rockabilly for combining these diverse styles into a new strain of modern
music that would be palatable to the average white American, or at the very
least his daughters. Only a decade after the fact, we know that 130 million
Backstreet Boys fans were most definitely wrong, but the 50 million Elvis fans
who morphed into 10 times that figure still aren't, even 35 years after his
tragic death.
Towards the end of his career, he was at least as well known for his diamond jewelry
collection as for his singing and swagger. His eight baguette cut diamond and
platinum wedding band, from his 1967 nuptials with Priscilla Presley, was
auctioned off six years ago for over $100,000. His massive 10-carat polished
diamond concert gift ring – consisting of 14 round cut 44-carat diamonds - was
auctioned off three years ago.
